Himlung Expedition

The Himlung Expedition follows the scenic Round Annapurna route, beginning from Kathmandu with a drive to Besisahar. From there, the trek continues to Koto and then towards the remote villages of Nar and Phu. After exploring these picturesque settlements, the expedition proceeds to establish Base Camp at the foot of Mt. Himlung. To summit this majestic peak, three high camps are set along the route.

Mt. Himlung, increasingly popular among climbers, remains one of Nepal’s lesser-visited mountains. Located on the Nepal-Tibet border, north of Annapurna and Manaslu, it towers above the Tibetan village of Phu in western Nepal. Officially opened for climbing by the Nepalese government in 1992, only a few international teams, including Japanese and French expeditions, have successfully completed this route. The ideal climbing seasons are September and October, offering the best weather and clear Himalayan views.

The Himlung Expedition is located near the Tibetan border in the Manaslu region, northeast of the Annapurna range. The area was officially opened for trekking and climbing by the Nepalese government in 1992. The expedition route follows the Round Annapurna trail, leading to Koto and then onward to the remote villages of Nar and Phu. Along the way, trekkers encounter high peaks and passes, narrow gorges, dense forests, rocky terrains, natural springs, ancient Gompas, and unique cultural settlements. Due to its remote and pristine nature, this region remains largely untouched, attracting very few visitors each year.

Preparation and Briefings in Kathmandu

Spend the day completing expedition preparations, shopping for any necessary gear, and attending briefings at the Department of Tourism and relevant authorities. Overnight stay at your hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 03 :

Day 2 & 03: Kathmandu Sightseeing and Expedition Preparation

Explore the cultural and historical highlights of Kathmandu with a day tour, while continuing final preparations for the Himlung Expedition. Overnight stay at your hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 04 :

Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (823 m)

Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, the starting point of the trek. Enjoy scenic views along the way and settle in for the night at a local lodge in Besisahar.

Day 05 :

Drive from Besisahar to Koto (2,610 m)

Drive from Besisahar to Koto, passing through beautiful landscapes and rivers along the route. Overnight stay at a lodge in Koto.

Day 06 :

Trek from Koto to Meta (3,560 m)

Begin your trek from Koto to Meta, enjoying stunning mountain views, traditional villages, and natural landscapes along the way. Overnight stay at a lodge in Meta.

Day 07 :

Trek from Meta to Phu Gaon (4,200 m)

Trek from Meta to the remote village of Phu Gaon, passing through scenic trails with views of high peaks, cliffs, and traditional settlements. Overnight stay at a lodge in Phu Gaon.

Day 08 :

Rest and Acclimatization at Phu Gaon (4,080 m)

Spend the day resting and acclimatizing to the high altitude in Phu Gaon. This helps prepare your body for the upcoming trek and climb. Overnight stay at a lodge in Phu Gaon.

Day 09 :

Trek from Phu Gaon to Himlung Base Camp (4,850 m)

Trek from Phu Gaon to the Himlung Base Camp, passing through rugged terrain, streams, and alpine landscapes. Overnight stay at a lodge or tented camp at Base Camp.

Day 10 :

Day 10–Day 19: Himlung Himal Climbing Period (7,126 m)

This period is dedicated to climbing Himlung Himal. During these days, three high camps will be established to aid acclimatization and summit attempts. Activities include rotation climbs, rest, Puja ceremonies, and summit preparations. Camping accommodation will be provided at Base Camp and the high camps throughout the expedition.

Day 11 :

Day 20: Trek from Base Camp to Phu Gaon (4,200 m)

After summiting and completing the climb, pack up and clean the Base Camp. Begin the descent, trekking back to the village of Phu Gaon. Overnight stay at a lodge in Phu Gaon.

Day 12 :

Day 21: Trek from Phu Gaon to Meta (3,560 m)

Trek from Phu Gaon back to Meta, retracing your steps through stunning landscapes and traditional villages. Overnight stay at a lodge in Meta.

Day 13 :

Day 22: Trek from Meta to Koto (2,610 m)

Descend from Meta to Koto, enjoying scenic mountain views and rivers along the trail. Overnight stay at a lodge in Koto.

Day 14 :

Day 23: Drive from Koto to Besisahar (823 m)

Drive approximately 8 hours by jeep from Koto to Besisahar, enjoying the scenic landscapes along the route. Overnight stay at a lodge in Besisahar.

Day 15 :

Day 24: Drive from Besisahar to Kathmandu (1,350 m)

Drive approximately 7 hours from Besisahar back to Kathmandu, enjoying the scenic hills and rivers along the way. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 16 :

Day 25: Free Day and Farewell Dinner

Enjoy a free day in Kathmandu for relaxation, shopping, or sightseeing. In the evening, join a farewell dinner accompanied by a cultural program showcasing traditional music and dance. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 26: Departure from Kathmandu
